As a dental student, he served as Class President, and was selected by the Academy of General Dentistry as Senior Dental Student.

Dr. Gillespie is married to Lisa, and they have three sons: Aaron, Davis, and Clay. They enjoy church activities, camping, and traveling. In his spare time, Dr. Gillespie enjoys landscaping, woodworking, fly-fishing and participating in his children's activities.

In the community, Dr. Gillespie has been involved with the Haywood County Chamber of Commerce and the Haywood County Arts Council. He is immediate past Chairman of the Waynesville Public Art Commission and recently joined the Downtown Waynesville Association Board of Directors. Dr. and Mrs. Gillespie are supporters of Haywood County Schools Foundation, providing funding for reading grants, and are also supporters of Haywood Christian Academy. He is a member of First Baptist Church of Waynesville and has served as Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Royal Ambassador Director, and youth worker.

To help create awareness on the importance of a clean environment among youth, Dr. Gillespie started Richland Creek StreamKeepers. Under the auspices of Haywood Waterways Association, the StreamKeepers meet periodically to clean an adopted stretch of Richland Creek, which flows through Waynesville. Youth from several area schools have participated in the clean-ups, learning not only about stream health and proper disposal practices, but the importance of community service as well.

In the dental community, Dr. Gillespie is a member of the American Dental Association, American Orthodontic Society, North Carolina Dental Society, and is past President of the WNC Dental Society. He is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry, having completed 500 hours of continuing dental education and a comprehensive evaluation to achieve that distinction. Dr. Gillespie is past Haywood County Coordinator for the American Dental Association's "Give Kid's A Smile" program. Working with area dentists, he coordinated efforts to provide free preventive dental services for needy children. And, as a short-term missionary for the International Mission Board, he has participated in construction projects and dental clinics in Honduras. Dr. Gillespie also provides indigent care through Haywood Christian Ministries and the North Carolina Baptist Men's Tooth Bus.
